This is the 2006 BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. I loved this adaptation before rereading the book and now after reading the book once again it is in my opinion the best one there is. Granted I haven't seen all the adaptations that are out there, but not only do they follow the story almost perfectly to the book the chemistry and passion between Jane and Rochester is there. I realized that Rochester is a good deal older than Jane, but in other versions he looks almost ancient next to her and it just looses some of the romance and gains a creep factor. In this one, they picked someone who is older but not old man old. Someone still young enough to be share his life. Jane on the other hand can often be portrayed as quiet, docile, and lets face it a little boring. Ruth Wilson is a wonderful Jane, she shows us a Jane that is passionate, strong willed, mature and someone the audience falls in love with yet still quiet and unsuspecting. There is one tiny thing that other versions spent more time on and that is the conditions of Lowood School. There is a glimmer of how the students were treated but it does not delve any deeper, but I'm okay with that. I would prefer more with Jane as an adult than as a child. There is a great deal of color in this version and I can't help but feel that Charlotte Bronte would love this version as much as I do. So to break it down, its true to the story and characters, captures the essence of the book and has a perfect amount of sensuality. It is going to take me a while to get to the other versions and there are at least two to get others I would like to watch. So keep checking up.
I love this adaptation. Okay, I have not seen any others but it was so perfect.
ReplyDeleteI do hate this trailer for it. It is ridiculous and does not give any glimps into the atmosphere that the book creates.
